CAIRO, December 10 (RIA Novosti) - Egyptian police discovered a cache containing 500 kg of explosives in the north of the Sinai Peninsula near the border with the Gaza Strip, MENA news agency reported Monday.
Police said the explosives, packed in 15 polyethylene bags, were intended to be smuggled across the border to Palestinian militants.
Egyptian authorities often report attempts to bring weapons and explosives into the violence-ridden Palestinian enclave, controlled by Islamist group Hamas. Israel has repeatedly accused Egypt of not taking sufficient action to halt cross-border weapons trafficking to Gaza militants.
After Hamas seized the Gaza Strip in June, the only functioning checkpoint on Egypt's border with the enclave was closed.
