THE HAGUE, December 12 (RIA Novosti) - A UN war crimes tribunal granted a provisional release to a former Yugoslav army officer until his appeal is considered, the International Criminal Tribunal said on Wednesday.

Veselin Sljivancanin, a former senior officer with the Yugoslav People's Army, was found guilty of "one count of aiding and abetting torture and sentenced to five years' imprisonment on 27 September 2007 for having failed to stop or prevent the continuation of the beatings endured by Croat prisoners of war at Ovcara, near Vukovar," the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia said on its Web site.

In granting his provisional release, the tribunal took into account the fact that Sljivancanin had already served almost 90 percent of his sentence.

Sljivancanin will "have to surrender his passport to the police station of his residence and remain within the boundaries of the Republic of Serbia."

He will not be entitled to discuss details of his case with mass media representatives and he "must not interfere in any way with victims or potential witnesses," the tribunal said.
