LONDON, December 13 (RIA Novosti) - A book of fairy tales handwritten by JK Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series, sold for a record 1.95 million pounds ($4 million) at an auction in London on Thursday.
'The Tales of Beedle the Bard', one of seven copies made after the British author finished the final Harry Potter book, had been given an estimated selling price of only 50,000 pounds by Sotheby's.
The auction house said: "Created, hand-written and illustrated by JK Rowling, the volume of previously untold stories attracted pre-sale interest from all corners of the world."
The proceeds from the sale will go to The Children's Voice, a charity co-founded by Rowling in 2005.
The buyer represented London fine art dealers Hazlitt Gooden and Fox.
Speaking after the sale, Rowling said "I am stunned and ecstatic. This will mean so much to children in desperate need of help. It means Christmas has come early for me."
