The bodies of an 82 year-old woman and her 32 year-old granddaughter, Irina Cox, were found by relatives in their apartment in Udomlya.
The Russian woman had bled to death after receiving over 40 knife wounds to her body, while her grandmother had been stabbed in the neck four times while she sat watching TV in her armchair.
Irina's 52 year-old husband William Cox, the main suspect, was found in a critical condition after slashing himself with a knife in a possible suicide attempt.
Later William told police during questioning: "I don't remember what happened. I smoked a cigarette on the balcony and felt groggy. It was like somebody had programmed me."
Investigators reported that their home had a strange appearance with Tarot cards scattered on the floor, a grey hooded robe hanging in the wardrobe, a red carpet with a dance pole for erotic dancing in the living room, as well as a bookcase stuffed with books on the occult.
The couple met in 2004 when Irina Cox worked as a pole dancer in Spain. The couple married in early November 2007, and were planning to fly to the U.K. to live on January 13.
Two weeks before the tragedy the couple shaved their heads.
A forensic examination has not been carried out, but the paper suggested the man may have smoked some kind of narcotic substance he brought from abroad.
