TBILISI, January 4 (RIA Novosti) - Over 10 supporters of Georgian opposition presidential candidate Levan Gachechiladze were beaten up Friday in Batumi, the capital of Georgia's autonomy of Adjaria, an election campaign official said.
"We were sticking campaign posters when a few cars stopped near us and people wearing masks got out. They beat us up with batons and took away our posters," David Batsikadze, who heads the candidate's Batumi-based election headquarters, told journalists.
Georgian police said criminal proceedings were launched, and an investigation is underway.
Georgia's early presidential elections will be held Saturday. Seven candidates, including former president Mikheil Saakashvili and businessman Badri Patarkatsishvili, are running.
