In the women's singles, only one out of six Russian players failed to make it to the next round, as Russia's Alisa Kleibanova suffered defeat at the hands of her compatriot, Anna Chakvetadze, seeded no. 6, in straight sets, 3-6, 4-6.
The other four Russian women winning on Day Four were the world No. 2 Svetlana Kuznetsova, Nadezhda Petrova (14), Maria Kirilenko (27) and the unseeded Yekaterina Makarova.
In the men's singles, both Russian players playing in the second round on Day Four of the tournament lost their matches.
Dmitry Tursunov (32), winner of the recent 2008 Medibank International tennis tournament in Sydney, Australia, lost to Sam Querrey of the United States 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 4-6, 2-6, while Marat Safin lost out in a match of mammoth length, which ended past midnight in Melbourne, to Marcos Baghdatis (15) of Cyprus 4-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 2-6.
