Stray dogs usually do not know how to act indoors and began to bark, whimper and damage furniture. After training they become more obedient, and their chances of finding a new owner increase.
After nine dogs took part in the experiment and were successfully adopted, the shelter's chief, Danuta Mikusz-Oslizlo, ordered that all of the shelter's 300 dogs should undergo the 'good dog' training course.
Poland's chief veterinary inspection says that the country has a large stray dog population, estimated at about 100,000. Animal shelters, which are unable to cope with such large numbers of animals, have to find new means of attracting owners in order to avoid putting dogs down.
Many Polish animal shelters have introduced online dog adoption, where people who cannot afford to adopt a pet or are not ready for it can take care of an animal via donations.
