Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahrudi also announced a new law under which all executions must be personally authorized by the head of the judiciary.
"Under a decree signed by Ayatollah Hashemi Shahrudi and issued on January 29, the publication of photos or pictures related to the process of carrying out the death sentence are prohibited," spokesman Ali Reza Jamshidi told national TV.
According to Amnesty International, about 20,000 people were on death row in Iran in 2006, and 1,591 people were executed during the year.
Capital punishment continues to be practiced in 69 countries. Around 90% of known executions take place in China, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Pakistan and the U.S., according to the international rights organization.
