RIGA, January 31 (RIA Novosti) - Latvia's former vice-consul Peteris Podvinskis, expelled from Russia last week in a tit-for-tat move, will work at Latvia's Embassy in the United States, the Baltic state's foreign minister said.

"The expulsion from Russia will not affect the career of our diplomat. Podvinskis will continue working in the Latvian embassy in the U.S.," Maris Riekstins said.

Riekstins added: "For the near future, he is barred entry into Russia."

Russia ordered Podvinskis to leave Moscow on January 25 "for activities incompatible with his diplomatic status and damaging the country's national security."

The move came few days after the ex-Soviet state expelled a Russian diplomat, Alexander Rogozhin, accusing him of espionage.

After the expulsions, the Latvian president said the dispute should be considered over.

"It was quite an appropriate response to the expulsion of a [Russian] diplomat, and the incident can be considered resolved," Valdis Zatlers told Latvia's National Television news channel on Monday.

The incident was the second time Latvia had expelled a Russian diplomat since the Baltic country gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. In 2004, the country expelled Pyotr Urzhumov, and in response Russia expelled Juris Poikans, first secretary of the Latvian Embassy.

Russia's relations with Latvia have thawed since the arrival of President Zatlers, who has avoided the vehemently anti-Kremlin rhetoric of his predecessor, Vaira Vike-Freiberga.

In December 2007 a new border treaty between the countries came into effect, which aims to bring to an end a long-running territorial dispute between the two countries.
