"Unknown gunmen driving an unidentified car opened fire with automatic weapons at a group of police officers near the administration building in the village of Ekazhevo at about 8:30 p.m. Moscow time (17:30 GMT)," an investigator with the republic's prosecutor's office said. "Two police officers were injured and hospitalized."
Investigators are working at the scene, he said.
But a security official in Ingushetia said the attackers targeted security guards of the republic's president. He added that their lives were not in danger.
Ingushetia and other republics near Chechnya, which suffered two devastating separatist wars in the 1990s-early 2000s, have been plagued by attacks on police and authorities, blamed both on separatists and criminal groups.
