MOSCOW, March 14 (RIA Novosti) - A plan to set up a Mediterranean Union, which received formal backing from the European Union on Friday, could be an example for Russia, a Russian senator said Friday.

EU leaders Thursday approved a proposal by France and Germany to establish the Mediterranean Union - a club of all 27 EU member states and other countries having access to the Mediterranean Sea.

"The Mediterranean Union has potentially important geo-economic and geopolitical significance. We are witnessing the creation of so-called large spaces where different strategic problems can be resolved," Mikhail Margelov, the chairman of the upper house's international affairs committee, said.

Russia is a member of several regional organizations, including Eurasec, the Collective Security Treaty Organization and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
