MINSK, March 14 (RIA Novosti) - Car owners, who were rammed by a drunk driver in early March after Belarus traffic police forced their vehicles to block the road, are demanding a criminal case be opened, a lawyer said on Friday.

On March 2 Belarusian traffic police were chasing a drunk driver driving a Volkswagen at 112 mph (180 km/h) along a highway towards Minsk, the capital of Belarus. The police decided to employ controversial tactics to stop the drunk driver and set up a make-shift road block using civilian vehicles lined up across the highway.

The cars, which contained five people as well as a three-year-old girl, were lined up across the highway when the drunken-Volkswagen driver smashed into them. Luckily no one was killed, although several people were injured.

"The injured parties demand those responsible for the traffic accident be brought to account and pay compensation for the physical and moral damage caused," lawyer Vera Stremkovskaya said.

She also said that Alexandr Mendelev, the head of the Belarusian traffic police service, had officially apologized for the incident and promised to turn all case materials concerning the road accident to the Prosecutor General's Office within the next five days.
