CHISINAU, March 20 (RIA Novosti) - Moldovan police confiscated 200 kg (441 lbs) of heroin on Thursday, the largest drug haul in the country's history, the interior minister said.
Georgy Papuk said drug smugglers had aimed to take the heroin into the European Union via Moldova. The drugs were discovered in a minivan, concealed by beans in a bag.
The minister said law enforcement bodies have seen a recent surge in activity of international drug dealers in the country, who police believe are trying to establish a route for supplies of drugs from Afghanistan via Turkey to EU states.
"The situation is so serious that the Supreme Security Council devoted a special session recently on the issue," Papuk said.
Police detained three foreign nationals in the operation and are now establishing the involvement of others.
