Palestinian leaders urge Hamas to give up Gaza control

GAZA, March 26 (RIA Novosti) - A senior Palestinian official urged the radical Islamic group Hamas on Wednesday to cede control of the Gaza Strip before resuming direct reconciliation talks with the pro-presidential Fatah party.

The rival factions failed to overcome their differences at Yemeni-brokered talks this week, but agreed to start dialogue in early April. Dialogue was suspended last June, when Hamas seized the enclave in a bloody conflict that left moderate President Mahmoud Abbas' forces in control of only the West Bank.

Speaking to reporters in the West Bank city of Ramallah, presidential adviser Nabil Amr said: "The ball is now in Hamas's court."

Abbas dismissed the Hamas-led coalition government after the Gaza takeover and stepped up U.S.-backed peace contacts with Israel, despite protests from Hamas.

Hamas, considered a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States and some European countries, has called for reconciliation, but refused to back down on demands to give up control of Gaza.
