Iran says no U.S. ties until it drops military policy in Mideast

TEHRAN, April 25 (RIA Novosti) - Tehran will not restore diplomatic relations with the United States, severed in 1979, until Washington gives up its military operations in the Middle East, the Islamic Republic's foreign minister said Friday.

"At present, establishing relations with the U.S. is not on the Iranian leadership's agenda. Americans should understand that the Middle East region cannot be governed by a policy of force," Manouchehr Mottaki told journalists.

Diplomatic ties between the two countries were severed after the 1979 Islamic Revolution when a group of armed students seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 50 diplomatic staff captive. The hostages were only released after 444 days in captivity.

American intelligence-related documents were also made public at the time.

The U.S. has accused Tehran of supporting militants in Iraq, Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories and claims the country's nuclear program is geared towards building an atomic bomb.

Iran has repeatedly denied the claims and said it has a right to civilian nuclear energy.
