Diplomatic ties between the two countries were severed after the 1979 Islamic Revolution when a group of armed students seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran, taking 50 diplomatic staff captive. The hostages were only released after 444 days in captivity.

The U.S. has accused Tehran of supporting militants in Iraq, Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories and claims the country's nuclear program is geared towards building an atomic bomb.
Iran has repeatedly denied the claims and said it has a right to civilian nuclear energy.
