BEIJING, April 25 (RIA Novosti) - A man from the Chinese city of Chongqing won a staggering $11.8 million in a lottery jackpot in the country, the China Daily said on Friday.

The identity of the man, who spent $91 on lottery tickets to become a millionaire seven hours later, is not likely to be revealed as the majority of jackpot winners prefer to remain anonymous.

A civil servant, who also chose anonymity, won over $16 million in the country's largest-ever jackpot in late November 2007.

China has seen a jackpot boom since it gave the green light to the lottery industry in 1987. In 2007, the country's lottery market was worth $14.5 billion, a 20% increase on 2006.

There are a number of jackpot winners each year, which attract more people to buy tickets as a way of fulfilling their dreams.

On April 1, China executed two bank employees in their thirties, who committed the country's largest-ever bank theft of $7.3 million, spending almost the entire sum on lottery tickets in an attempt to replace the money they had stolen with a jackpot win.

Authorities have recently filed charges against the company running the lottery for allegedly assisting the thieves by giving them money bags to pay for the tickets.
