A total of 20 employees at the Lobvinsky chemical plant suspended work on April 28 demanding over 19 million rubles ($817,500) back pay. Although the factory owners have paid them some of the wage arrears the strikers had earlier said they would continue their action until all the debts are paid.
"The owners of the chemical plant have signed a letter of guarantee committing themselves to paying the strikers all the wage arrears by June 10," the spokesman said.
A total of 18 workers had been involved in the hunger strike as of Monday. One of the protesters needed urgent medical aid to normalize his blood pressure.
The Lobvinsky chemical plant produces ethanol, carbon dioxide, yeast and household chemicals, and employs a total of 514 workers.
The latest strike in the Urals Region came less than a month after workers at a bauxite mine, called Krasnaya Shapochka (Little Red Riding Hood), returned to work following a 23-day strike for higher wages.
