NEW DELHI, May 13 (RIA Novosti) - At least five powerful explosions rocked the west Indian city of Jaipur, Rajasthan state, the country's television said on Tuesday.

A series of blasts is reported to have occurred in the historic part of the city at 7:40 p.m. local time (14:10 GMT).

The Times of India said according to unconfirmed reports about 20 people had been killed and scores more injured. Some TV reports put the death toll higher at 35, however.

Rajasthan's state police chief has been quoted by national TV as saying the blasts were a terrorist attack. Although no militant group has claimed responsibility for the blasts so far.

Security has been tightened across the country with troops deployed in the region. Indian President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have condemned the blasts and called for calm.
