MOSCOW, May 14 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Wednesday that he would pay an official visit to Germany in early June.

"Considering the special relationship [between Russia and Germany] my first visit to Europe will be to Germany in early June," Medvedev told German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Medvedev also referred to growing economic ties between the two countries, with bilateral annual trade estimated at over $50 billion, making Germany Russia's biggest trading partner.

Steinmeier, who became the first foreign official to be met by Dmitry Medvedev since he was sworn in as president a week ago, said that the countries had made progress not only in economics, but also in other fields such as scientific research and education.

Earlier on Wednesday, Steinmeier met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in the Ural city of Yekaterinburg.

After the meeting, Lavrov said the talks would "make it possible to fully prepare for the tenth round of intergovernmental consultations chaired by the Russian president and the German chancellor and due this fall in St. Petersburg."

Lavrov said the new Russian president and government would ensure continuity in bilateral cooperation.
