ST. PETERSBURG, May 22 (RIA Novosti) - Communists in St. Petersburg have voiced objections to Steven Spielberg's new film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, saying it will give young people false ideas on Soviet realities.

The film, set to premiere in Russia on Thursday, is set in the 1950-s, and pits Indiana Jones, played by Harrison Ford, against agents of the Soviet Union.

"We strongly declare our deep resentment over the release of this provocative film in Russia," communists in Russia's second city said in a statement, while calling the film a throwback to the Cold War and an insulting lampoon of the Soviet Union.

"Soviet soldiers and spies, who are cynically and ruthlessly eliminated by the U.S. super-hero are portrayed in a cartoon-like and objectionable manner. Such fiction breeds a demoralizing climate among Russia's youth," the statement said.

The film is to be shown on 808 screens in Russia, setting a record for a foreign movie.
