BEIRUT, May 25 (RIA Novosti) - Lebanon's parliament is expected to elect a new president on Sunday to end a political crisis that has threatened a new civil war in the country.

All of Lebanon's warring political leaders have agreed to vote for army chief General Michel Suleiman under a deal brokered in Qatar on Wednesday to end a 19-month political crisis which led to the worst violence the country has seen since 1990.

The political stalemate began in late 2006 when pro-Syrian ministers quit the cabinet of Prime Minister Fuad Siniora during a power struggle. The U.S.-backed government and the Hezbollah-led opposition spent over a year deadlocked and unable to elect a president.

The deal also calls for the formation of a national unity government, in which the opposition will have veto power.
