KABUL, June 14 (RIA Novosti) - Afghan security forces are combing the city of Kandahar to try and catch more than a 1,000 prisoners who escaped in a Taliban suicide attack on the local prison, Afghan officials said on Saturday.
A truck packed with explosives smashed into the Kandahar jail Friday evening, destroying the prison walls. Following the blast around 30 Taliban militants on motorcycles attacked the building freeing at least 1,000 Taliban militants and inmates.
Around 15 Afghan prison guards were reported to have been killed during the attack.
Foreign and Afghan troops have cordoned off the city and are conducting an operation to try and recapture the prisoners. Local residents have been advised to stay indoors.
