MOSCOW, June 21 (RIA Novosti) - Fifteen people were hospitalized, including five of them in serious condition, after a self-made explosive device went off in southeast Moscow overnight, police said on Saturday.
The explosion occurred at about 2 a.m. after a Euro 2008 quarterfinal game between Turkey and Croatia, when young people were having beer near a food store. Police suggested the blast occurred through the casual handling of explosives.
Initial reports said 17 people, most of them residents of a nearby hostel, were injured. Five of them suffered fragment wounds and leg fractures.
"Fifteen are remaining in hospital... Police have launched investigation into the illegal use of explosives," a police official said.
"Witnesses said no conflicts had occurred before the explosion, which suggests the casual handling of explosive as a cause of the blast," the official said.
