KABUL, June 24 (RIA Novosti) - At least five people were killed and 26 wounded in western Afghanistan after a suicide bomber blew a car up near a convoy of NATO-led forces, local media reported on Tuesday.

The attack took place in the Shindand district of the western Herat province as an International Security Assistance Force convoy was passing through late on Monday.

Earlier reports said four people were killed and 12 wounded in the attack, which was claimed by Taliban militants.

The Taliban, ousted from power after a U.S.-led military operation in 2001, have been stepping up their activities in recent months. The radical Islamic movement has vowed to continue suicide attacks in order to undermine the current Afghan administration's attempts to win the confidence of the people.
