"This will be Metallica's first solo concert in Piter [the city's abbreviated name]. The concert will take place exactly a year after the group's first solo performance in Moscow," Vladimir Zubitsky, president of the Russky Show-Tsentr company, told RIA Novosti.
The concert will take place at the Petersburg SKK indoor stadium.
Zubitsky said the program will be similar to that in Moscow last year - "greatest hits, like last time."
Metallica came to Moscow for their Sick of the Studio 2007 tour last year, and performed in front of some 60,000 fans along with 3,000 security officials.
Before last year's visit to Russia, the band had played in the country only once, at a rock festival in 1991.
Formed in 1981, Metallica released their first album, Kill 'Em All, in late 1983 and achieved global fame in 1986.
Zubitsky said the band will perform in Moscow again next year.
