NAZRAN, July 14 (RIA Novosti) - At least one police officer and one gunman were killed Monday in a shootout in the center of Nazran, the largest city in the southern Russian republic of Ingushetia, a local law enforcement source said.
Two police officers were wounded earlier Monday when unknown gunmen fired on their car.
Police gave chase and cornered the assailants near a local market. They refused to surrender and opened fire, fatally wounding one of the police officers.
One militant was killed in the exchange and at least one other escaped, prompting a citywide manhunt.
