IN THE SOUTH OSSETIA CONFLICT:

* Russian peacekeepers in Georgia's breakaway republic of South Ossetia said Georgian forces remain in the region, and are shelling apartment blocks in the capital

* Col.-Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, deputy head of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff, denied Georgian claims that Russian warplanes have been bombing towns in Georgia

* Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin accused foreign media of pro-Georgian bias in their coverage of the ongoing conflict between Georgia and Russia over breakaway South Ossetia

* Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin said negotiations with Georgia will only be possible once the South Caucasus state signs a ceasefire agreement

* Foreign ministers from the EU's 27 member states will gather for an emergency meeting early next week to discuss measures to help settle the conflict in South Ossetia, EU diplomatic sources said
