IN THE SOUTH OSSETIA CONFLICT:

* Russian peacekeepers in Georgia's breakaway republic of South Ossetia said Georgian forces remain in the region, and are shelling apartment blocks in the capital

* Col.-Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, deputy head of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff, denied Georgian claims that Russian warplanes have been bombing towns in Georgia
