BISHKEK, August 14 (RIA Novosti) - Inmates at a prison in Kyrgyzstan have staged a riot, with some prison officials among the casualties, a Kyrgyz news agency reported Thursday.
Agency 24.kg said two prison officials were taken hostage at the jail located 40 kilometers from Kyrgyzstan's capital, Bishkek. It is so far unclear what caused the mass unrests, which began at about 21:00 local time (15:00 GMT).
Riot police and Interior Ministry troops have been dispatched to the high-security prison which houses convicts guilty of serious crimes, some serving life sentences.
A penitentiary official and several lawmakers on an inspection tour were killed during a prison riot in the Central Asian republic in October 2005.
