"I never expected to win this medal. At the beginning, I was lagging behind. That was not my strategy. I feel proud to have won this Gold medal for Russia. I feel my dream has come true," the official Olympics website quoted Borchin as saying.

The bronze medal went to Jared Tallent of Australia, whose time was 1 hour 19.42 minutes.

Later in the day Russia crushed 28-11 the United States in the final of the women's team saber event to win the gold medals.

"It was a hard day. We won gold, not against the United States but against Italy," the Olympics website said quoting Svetlana Boyko of the Russian team as saying.

Italy won the bronze medals after defeating the team from Hungary 32-23.

Russia is currently ranked 9th in the overall medal standings with 5 gold, 8 silver and 8 bronze medals, while the Olympic hosts, China, tops the standings boasting 27 gold, 13 silver and 7 bronze medals.
