BEIJING, August 17 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Yelena Dementyeva has won the gold medal in the final of women's tennis event of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, after beating her compatriot Dinara Safina 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Both Russians enjoyed straight sets victories in the semifinals as Dementyeva defeated her compatriot Vera Zvonaryova 6-3, 7-6 and Safina overcame China's Li Na 7-6, 7-5.
The bronze medal was earlier won by Russia's Zvonaryova who beat China's Na.
Russia is currently ranked 8th in the overall medal standings with 6 gold, 10 silver and 9 bronze medals, while China tops the standings boasting 29 gold, 13 silver and 10 bronze medals.
