Thousands of South Ossetians and Georgians have become refugees following a major offensive by Tbilisi on secessionist Tskhinvali on August 8 and Moscow's subsequent "peace enforcement" operation that sent Russian tanks and troops into the region.
"After the end of military action our main goal is to meet the needs of the many people who were wounded or displaced from the conflict regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia," Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told journalists. "We should do more for the over 150,000 refugees, so Germany is allocating another 1 million euros for immediate aid."
Germany earmarked 1 million euros last week. The UN High Commissioner for Refugees took charge of half the amount, with the remainder transferred to the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The Foreign Ministry will also send a group of experts to Georgia, including to the conflict zones, to assess the situation and deliver humanitarian aid.
