15:44 GMT 21.08.2008 (Updated: 19:46 GMT 19.10.2022) Special force fighters – members of a special mountain unit of the South Ossetian army commanded by Bala Bestayev – were high up in the mountains when the bombardment of Tskhinvali began late at night. Early in the day, the group entered the city. Armed only with automatic rifles, they marched against Georgian tanks to save peaceful civilians.
