VLADIKAVKAZ, August 21 (RIA Novosti) - Georgian border guards permitted some 300 Russian citizens to cross the border and enter Russia, a spokesman for the Russian Border Guard Service in North Ossetia said Thursday.
Alexander Solod said the Russians were visiting Georgia when the recent conflict between Russia and Georgia erupted after Tbilisi launched an attack on Tskhinvali, the capital of its breakaway province of South Ossetia, on August 8.
"Almost none of them had any money left so they were unable to leave Georgia via other countries," Solod said.
He also said that good relations between Russian and Georgian border guards meant the Russian side had in turn permitted five Georgian nationals to return home.
But he said that only people carrying their passports had been allowed to cross the border.
