Russia's Dementieva storms to U.S. Open semis

Russia's Yelena Dementieva advanced on Tuesday to the semifinals of the 2008 U.S. Open tennis tournament beating Patty Schnyder of Switzerland in straight sets.
MOSCOW, September 2 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Yelena Dementieva advanced on Tuesday to the semifinals of the 2008 U.S. Open tennis tournament beating Patty Schnyder of Switzerland in straight sets.

In a quarterfinal match that lasted 75 minutes, Dementieva, the No. 5 seed and the 2008 Olympic champion, had few problems and won 6-2, 6-3.

Dementieva will now face in the semifinal the winner of the match between Sybille Bammer of Austria (seeded 29) and Jelena Jankovic of Serbia (seeded 2).

Besides Dementieva, another Russian, Dinara Safina (seeded 6), has also made the quarterfinals. She faces Flavia Pennetta of Italy (seeded 16) on Wednesday.

Safina and Dementieva met in the final of the Beijing Olympics, with Dementieva beating her compatriot 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
