Helicopter taxis take off around Moscow

Subscribe
MOSCOW, September 19 (RIA Novosti) - A new helicopter taxi service was launched around Moscow on Friday, targeting large businesses that can afford to avoid the Russian capital's notorious traffic jams.

A Ecureuil helicopter, manufactured by Eurocopter, whisks up to four passengers over the gridlocked cars at up to 250 km/h (155 mph), following routes between the main airports and major cities near the Russian capital.

But Heliexpress is not a cure-all - flying restrictions over Moscow mean there is no way to avoid the traffic inside the MKAD, the highway that marks the city's outer boundary.

Therefore the service is focused on Vnukovo, Sheremetevo and Domodedovo airports and regional cities including Vladimir, Tver and Kaluga.

The standard fare is 53,000 rubles ($2,080) for an hour, depending on the number of passengers. That will get you from Vnukovo to Sheremetevo and back twice, or half way to Nizhny Novgorod.

The Heliexpress service was jointly launched by Tyumen-based UTair Aviation, Russian Helicopter Systems and Eurocopter Vostok, part of EADS subsidiary Eurocopter.
