Death toll following Russian prison riot rises to two

NIZHNY NOVGOROD, September 25 (RIA Novosti) - An inmate at a high-security prison in Russia's Volga city of Samara died in hospital from injuries suffered in Tuesday's riot and subsequent fire, bringing the death toll to two, investigators said on Thursday.

The man suffered serious burns when a group of prisoners set fire to an administrative building, a warehouse and other facilities. The riot, involving around 50 inmates, broke out in Prison No. 6 on the city's outskirts late on Tuesday.

According to recent reports, 25 inmates were injured, two seriously. Three prison guards received slight injuries.

An investigation into the incident is underway.

The prison has over 2,000 inmates, of which around 700 are serving sentences of more than 15 years.
