Swiss court rejects Muslim's request for segregated swimming

GENEVA, October 24 (RIA Novosti) - The Swiss Supreme Court ruled on Friday against a Muslim father's application demanding that his two sons have swimming lessons separately from girls, the Swiss National News Agency reported.

The ruling overturns a decision taken in 1993 by same court, when a Muslim schoolgirl was permitted to have her swimming lessons exclusively with other girls.

Supreme Court members said change in stance is due to developments in Swiss society in the past 15 years.

"The verdict should not be taken as an anti-Muslim decision. It is driven by a wish to have a strong school," Thomas Merkli, the head of the Supreme Court, said.
