MOSCOW, November 7 (RIA Novosti) - The State Duma adopted in the first reading on Friday a draft law under which gifts to government officials worth more than 5,000 rubles ($186) would be confiscated.

The adoption of the bill coincides with the ratification in Russia of the UN Convention against Corruption and the Criminal Law Convention on Corruption. Amendments will be made to Russian laws on the country's police, prosecutors, federal security and customs services, as well as a number of other laws.

The amendments would impose the restrictions, bans and commitments set by the bill against corruption on policemen, prosecutors, Interior Ministry officials, military personnel, and federal security service and customs officers.

The procedure for holding MPs, judges and other categories of people criminally responsible will also be simplified.

The number of registered corruption-related crimes in Russia's law enforcement agencies increased more than 35% in the first nine months of 2008 to 1,401 instances, the country's chief military prosecutor, Sergei Fridinsky, said on Thursday.

President Dmitry Medvedev has made the fight against corruption one of his top priorities since coming to office in May, signing a decree to set up a presidential anti-corruption council just two weeks after his inauguration.
