ATHENS, December 7 (RIA Novosti) - The riots that have erupted after police shot dead a teenage boy in Athens have left 16 banks, 20 shops and 12 cars burned in the Greek capital, the police said on Sunday.

The riots began in the Greek capital late on Saturday soon after the shooting in the central Exarchia district where youths threw petrol bombs at police, burned cars and smashed shop windows.

The riots, the worst violence in years, quickly spread to Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest city, and other towns in the north of the country.

Clashes between police and anarchist groups have become a regular scene in the Greek capital since 1985 when a policeman killed a teenager.
