WASHINGTON, December 19 (RIA Novosti) - The United States and Ukraine have agreed on strategic partnership in economic development, energy and defense aiming to strengthen Kiev's potential as a NATO aspiring state.
The U.S.-Ukraine Charter on Strategic Partnership was signed between U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Volodymyr Ohryzko on Friday.
In the document, the sides agreed to coordinate the potential of NATO and Kiev by strengthening Ukraine's military training and equipment.
"We plan to undertake a program of enhanced security cooperation intended to increase Ukrainian capabilities and to strengthen Ukraine's candidacy for NATO membership," the document said.
The countries said they would set up a working group on energy security, pledging to strengthen Ukraine's infrastructure for gas transit and also diversifying Ukraine's nuclear fuel sources.
