A military takeover occurred in the country just a few hours after the death on Monday of Guinea's 74-year-old President Lansana Conte, who had ruled the country for 24 years.
"We hope that all political forces in the Republic of Guinea - our old friend and partner - will display a sense of responsibility and make all necessary efforts to achieve national accord in these difficult days to resolve the acute political and social-economic problems in the interest of the entire Guinean nation," the ministry said.
"Moscow understands that a shift of power in any country should be conducted in a constitutional way. As is well known, this is the moral position of the international community, including the African Union," the ministry said.
Captain Moussa Dadis Camara who led the military takeover and now calls himself president, has received the backing of Guinean Prime Minister Ahmed Tidiane Souare.
