Communists to take Mordovia election results to EU court

MOSCOW, December 30 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Communist Party has filed a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights over the results of last December's State Duma elections in Mordovia, the party said Tuesday.

The communists said they had submitted a relevant complaint to the Russian Prosecutor General's office to invalidate the December 2, 2007 elections in the Volga republic but "a decision has not been made yet."

Mordovia's Supreme Court refused on July 9 this year to grant the party's request.

The Communist Party's complaint to the European court argues that "the right to free elections through a secret ballot was violated," as well as that the judiciary failed to ensure a fair hearing in the republic.

The party took second place in the elections to the lower house of the Russian parliament in the republic with 11.57% of the vote.
