MOSCOW, December 30 (RIA Novosti) - Police on Monday have arrested a man and wife in a theft and polygamy scam in India, according to the country's Indopia news agency.
According to police reports, Asfari, 31, whose real name is Seema, and her husband, Mohammed Shahid, 40, were arrested after a man called police to complain that his wife, Asfari, had stolen jewelry and some $4,000 before disappearing.
Another man named Bharat married Asfari off to potential husbands, apparently with her real husband's permission, and after a time she would steal valuables and then disappear. At least a dozen such marriages were arranged by the group in several of India's states.
Bharat is believed to be the mastermind of the scam and is still at large. Mohammed's participation in the racket has yet to be ascertained.
