MOSCOW, January 1 (RIA Novosti) - Armed gunmen opened fire on a police vehicle in Khasavyurt in Russia's volatile North Caucasus republic of Daghestan injuring an officer, a police source said on Thursday.
The attack occurred late Wednesday night the source said, "Unknown assailants opened fire on the police vehicle which was carrying two officers, as a result of the shooting the passenger...was hospitalized with various injuries."
Some 17 9mm-caliber cartridges were retrieved from the scene, he added.
Police are searching for the gunmen.
Daghestan and Ingushetia, which both border Chechnya, have seen a sharp increase in attacks on law enforcement and military personnel of late.
