MOSCOW, January 1 (RIA Novosti) - At least 59 people died and 212 others were injured as a fire engulfed an up market nightclub during New Year celebrations in the Thai capital, Bangkok.
The fire started shortly after a firework display at the Santika club which is popular with locals and tourists.
Most of the victims are believed to have suffocated as they tried to flee the club, which had only one main door and no signs indicating emergency exits.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that no Russians were thought to be among the victims, which are believed to include Australians, Japanese, British, French and Singaporeans.
"According to preliminary information, no Russian nationals are among them [victims]," the statement said.
