NIZHNY NOVOGOROD, January 1 (RIA Novosti) - A staggering 35 people were killed and more than 90 injured in fires and traffic accidents on New Year's Eve in the Russian Volga Federal District, the regional emergencies ministry said on Thursday.
"In the last 24 hours in the Volga area over 185 fires, in which 23 people died, and 131 traffic accidents, where 12 people were killed, and 91 injured, were recorded," a statement said.
In the village of Chupayevo, republic of Bashkiria, four people died in a house fire on Wednesday night. A further three people died when an electric heater caught fire in a house in the town of Kulebaki, Nizhny Novgorod Region.
Six young people died in a three-vehicle pileup on the Nizhny Novgorod-Kirov highway.
