VELIKY NOVGOROD, January 22 (RIA Novosti) - Authorities in a prison in the northwest Russian city of Veliky Novgorod have seized 20 grams of heroin from a prisoner believed to be selling drugs to other inmates, a spokesman said on Thursday.
"The drugs were seized from a 45-year-old man from Veliky Novgorod who is serving his prison term in a colony," a spokesman for the Federal Drug Control Service said.
The prisoner could face up to 20 years in jail if found guilty of the offense. A criminal case has been opened.
Drug police said numerous attempts to sell drugs to prisoners had been prevented between 2008 and 2009. They said sophisticated methods were used to bring the drugs into the prison, including hiding the substances in toothpaste tubes, tea bags, sweets, nuts and fruit.
