Investigators in the town of Ipatovo, in the Stavropol Territory, say Vladimir Kurilov, 45, went to see his father, an 85-year-old WWII veteran, while his mother had gone to visit his elder brother. The Life.ru website said that after Alexei Kurilov refused to hand over the money, his unemployed, alcoholic son began to torture him.
After beating him, Vladimir built a "bonfire" of cloths and rags and placed his father's hand in it. Alexei then passed out from the pain, falling face-first into the flames. The son then fled.
The WWII hero was later discovered by a neighbor, "burnt up and moaning." He was taken to hospital where he managed to tell police what he had happened before dying of his injuries.
His 80-year-old wife died seven days later from a "broken-heart."
"What misery," said the dead man's daughter-in-law, the wife of the elder son. "Even in my most terrible nightmare, I would never have imagined that the son of a veteran could throw his father on a bonfire for money."
