STRASBOURG, January 28 (RIA Novosti) - Thomas Hammarberg, the Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights will pay a visit to Georgia and its breakaway republic of Abkhazia on February 10-14.
The official, who has never visited Abkhazia before, said he also plans to visit Russia's North Caucasus republics of North Ossetia and Ingushetia, as well as Moscow. He said he planned to meet with local officials and representatives of non-government groups and civic organizations.
Hammarberg visited another Georgian breakaway republic, South Ossetia, in August, September and November 2008. He later published a report describing the humanitarian situation in the republic, which was attacked by Georgia in August, as "critical."
The official is expected to present his final report on the situation in the area of the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict in late spring.
