KRASNODAR, February 9 (RIA Novosti) - A probe has begun into the case of a mentally-ill elderly couple who chained their daughter to her bed for six months in southern Russia, an investigator told RIA Novosti on Monday.
Konstantin Baranov said the family, from the village of Shavanovskoe in the Krasnodar Territory, had chained their 27-year-old daughter to her bed for six months "in order to keep her from becoming a vagrant."
"For six months the woman's parents chained her leg to the bed to keep her at home because she was prone to vagrancy," Baranov said.
The mother and daughter are presently being held in a psychiatric hospital. The entire family had been receiving psychiatric help for some time, according to investigators.
"The crime was discovered on Friday evening during the local administration's [research] into disadvantaged families in the village," Baranov said.
